Best Singles of 2009

What was very apparent, very quickly, when I say down to make this list was how much of a 'ladies' year this has been. My favourite single of the year? Probably either Pearl Jam, Taylor Swift or Yeah Yeah Yeahs. But what follows in no particular order are my Top 20 (or at least as I remember them – no doubt, as per usual I have left out one or two records I really loved but have forgotten about!)

1. Pearl Jam – The Fixer (Short, sharp, sweet – a cracking song)
2. Taylor Swift – Love Story (Yes it's cheesy, but I loved this record. Catchy like all great pop)
3. Nell Bryden – Second Time Around (proof that you can say it all on just over 2 mins)
4. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (because was trying to limit to one per artist had to choose this over equally excellent Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero)
5. Placebo - For What It's Worth - (Battle for Sun also great though )
6. Kelly Clarkson – I don't hook up (Just a great pop song)
7. The Veronicas – Untouched (Just the kind of pop rock I like. So should have released This Love here though)
8. The Prodigy – Invaders Must Die (Yes, they must)
9. Florence & The Machine – Rabbitt Heart (The critics have loved Florence. I think album is ok, but this is the stand out track)
10. Lady Ga Ga – Paparazzi (I tried to resist but eventually she wore me down)
11. The Decemberists - The Rake’s Song (buy the album)
12. Bonnie “Prince” Billy - I Am Goodbye (I LOVE this. Another short song, and another instant classic)
13. Pet Shop Boys - Love etc (One of their finest moments)
14. Steel Panther - Death To All But Metal (This is just wonderful for anyone who remembers 80's 'hair metal'. Takes pastiche to a new level. )
15. Echo and the Bunnymen - I Think I Need it Too ( did someone say return to form?)
16. Kings of Leon – Use Somebody (KoL have really struck a chord on these shores this last year, and songs like this demonstrate why)
17. Bat For Lashes – Daniel (Crept up on me a bit this one. Just a beautiful song)
18. Paramore – Ignorance ( A bit Avril, but good all the same)
19. The Duckworth Lewis Method - Meeting Mr Miandad ( …in a VW Campervan …)
20. Bruce Springsteen – Working on a Dream (and long may he keep on working)

I love how you provide links to the videos. Very nice.

I think my favorite cut on the Pearl Jam album is "Amongst The Waves".

That Steel Panther video is hysterical.

That is a nice list, I will have to check out the links to the videos.

I like the Echo and the Bunnymen song too. In fact, I like most of what they have done since their "classic" period... the "Siberia" album in particular!

JM - I really like Amongst The Waves too - great track (and yes, the SP video is good isn't it!)

Snave - thanks for comment. I'd been indifferent to most of their recent stuff, but think new album is up there with their best.

Pop Hall of Fame

“It’s not rock ‘n’ roll anymore anyway,’’ he said. “What we used to call rock ‘n’ roll – the original term, defined by DJ Alan Freed – meant to refer to a certain kind of music that Chuck Berry and Little Richard and Elvis [Presley] were playing, and it was distinguishable from ‘popular music’ at that time ...What you have now is a pop music hall of fame, and I don’t care if I’m in the Pop Music Hall of Fame or not’’  Todd on why he's not especially a fan of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame as told to the  Plain Dealer

Todd Rundgren @ The Forum 23/11/2008

I think this was Todd's first appearance at the Forum since he recorded a live album there back in 1994 on the No World Order tour. He was all alone for that one. Tonight, things could not have been more different as Todd brought the Arena tour to London. What can I say. It rocked. Playing the same set that he has been doing for the whole tour - opening with Love in Action, Open my Eyes, Black Maria, I Saw the Light etc, before playing Arena in its entirety - this was guitar rock heaven (and let's face it, probably the last time you'll see Todd doing this kind of tour in the UK). The band were tight, the backing vocals near perfection, and a few ropey moments aside, Todd's vocals strong and good. It was a real joy to see him playing so much lead guitar, after recent years of being more of the 'singer in the band'. There were a few technically issues near the start, when Todd couldn't get the clean guitar sound he wanted, and one amusing moment when he manag...

Pull in Emergency @ Camden Barfly 23/07/10

I like to get out and see new and up and coming bands and last night I went along to the album launch for a Band called Pull in Emergency. As is the case most times for these types of gigs, there were also 3 other bands on the bill, and I have to say that all had something to offer. Hella Better Dancer http://www.myspace.com/hellabetterdancer The night began with a bunch of 16 year olds, fronted by Tilly Scantlebury. They are a band that mange to fuse elements of early Cure, and PJ Harvey in a pleasing manor. I really liked the guitar work by Soph Nathan. Like all good guitarist she adds colour where it is needed without over powering the songs. Of the songs they played I really liked 'The City Sea' and new rocky song 'Say it' ? This is certainly a group worth keeping an eye on. They don't quite have the stage presence mastered yet, but time will bring that, and I'm already looking forward to what they'll sound like in a few years, but don't wait until t...
